R&B and hip hop on public radio, Mile High edition.
The Drop began in June 2019 as an experiment by Rocky Mountain Public Media, a public station for R&B and hip hop at a time when hardly any existed. A grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting paid for the start, and for its first year and a half it could only be heard on a digital sub-channel of the jazz station KUVO, in an app and online. In February 2021 the organisation bought it a place on the FM dial in Denver, at 104.7. It still calls itself one of only a handful of urban alternative public stations in the country.
The music runs from old-school crate classics to new R&B and hip hop, with Colorado's independent artists worked into the mix. SugaBear and La Molly take the mornings, DJ Bella Scratch the middle of the day, Mang-Yee Reverie the afternoons and Indigo Jones the nights. Saturdays open with Lake Knight Radio, half an hour made by schoolchildren from the Denver DJ School, and Sunday mornings go to gospel.
