Bhangra, Bollywood and Punjabi pop with a British accent.
Asian Network grew out of BBC Radio Leicester, which started a daily show for the city's South Asian community in 1976 and within a year was reaching two thirds of it. On 30 October 1989 it launched as the Asian Network across the Midlands on the medium wave transmitters of Radio Leicester and BBC WM, became a full-time service on 4 November 1996 and went national on digital radio on 28 October 2002. Most of it is in English, though Sunday evenings keep programmes in South Asian languages.
Days run on Punjabi pop, Bollywood and British Asian R&B, with Nikita Kanda at breakfast, Haroon Rashid mid-morning, Jaz Singh on drive and the Official Asian Music Chart on Friday afternoons. Bhangra gets its own hours through the Panjabi Hit Squad and the Asian Network Punjabi show, a Bollywood show airs most days, and DJ Limelight's New Music Show and Bobby Friction go looking for what's next.
The family wedding, every day.
