Funk across five decades, from boogie to nu-funk.
Funk the Planet streams out of Santa Barbara, owned and programmed by Vince Leo, a veteran funk and soul DJ who has been at it long enough to treat the genre as one continuous line rather than a nostalgia act. The station runs commercial-free and takes listener donations instead, and its remit is the whole evolution of funk — the 1970s foundations, the boogie and jazz-funk that came after, the Minneapolis sound, new jack swing, neo-soul, and the modern producers still working the form today.
Most of the week is a rolling mix, but evenings carry themed shows: Manic Purple Mondays on Prince, his side projects and the artists he wrote and produced for; New Jack Attack; The B-Boy Hip-Hop Rewind; The Boogie Nights Express on old-school dancefloor cuts; A Brand New Funk on the new releases. Tracks are picked one at a time, not pulled from a service.
One man, one very deep crate.
