Post-punk and coldwave for a haunted waiting room.
Dispersion Wave started in Toronto during the pandemic, a self-funded project run by people who call themselves sonic friends beaming warm goodness out of a troubled world. It runs without ads on a SOCAN licence and listener donations, and StreamFinder later nominated it for best new station. The website is part of the act, a generative artwork by Wielo that redraws itself from your input and random parameters, so no two visits look quite the same. Song requests go in through a small paper-plane icon on the page.
Post-punk sets the pulse, with coldwave and darkwave pulling it into the shadows while synth-pop and dream pop let some light back in. Every so often the mood tips into dark techno or breakcore. Around a hundred artists turn up in half a day of plays, and the station says it listens for particular characteristics in each record, so new bands and forgotten ones end up side by side.
Gloom you can still dance to.
