Alt-rock staples rubbing shoulders with post-punk upstarts.
Zeilsteen Radio went on air in 1999 from a spare room in Friesland, where Herman Zeilstra, who has also worked for the regional broadcaster Omrop Fryslân, set it up to play songs he thought deserved more airtime than the charts gave them. The idea never shifted, even as the audience grew from a handful of listeners to people tuning in from around the world. An iPhone app followed in 2010, and every track on the playlist is still chosen by a person rather than suggested by a recommendation engine.
The rotation sits between alternative rock and indie, with nineties alt-rock favourites sharing the hour with newer guitar bands and a strong streak of post-punk revival. Pop with an alternative bent turns up now and then. Fresh names are added regularly and flagged on the site as they arrive, so a familiar chorus is rarely more than a couple of songs away from something you have never heard.
Older than Spotify, still human.
