Modern soul and soulful house for grown-up dancefloors.
Starpoint Radio began in 1985 as a Sunday-only pirate for London and the Home Counties, calling itself The Real Alternative, and signed off as an unlicensed station in December 1988 with a final show from Crazy Larry's on the King's Road. In June 1991 it won one of the first restricted licences and broadcast for three weeks from Windsor Safari Park. A merger with another former London pirate produced the official broadcaster of the Southport Weekender, and in 2005 Starpoint relaunched on its own.
Soul runs through nearly every hour, from the weekday breakfast show and a daily disco-soul slot to southern soul and late-night R&B, while soulful house takes over towards midnight. Sunday afternoons belong to the UK Soul Chart, and most presenters are veteran club DJs with decades of crate-digging behind them. A few shows go out live from soul festivals, and an evening of lovers rock turns up midweek.
Soul boys never retire.
