New-release radio with a record critic's instincts.
Radar went on air on 25 June 2002 with a full day given over to a single British band, timed to its Portuguese dates that July, and Álvaro Covões started it as a counterweight to the rock radio the country already had on offer. It has broadcast on 97.8 from Rua Pêro da Covilhã in Restelo ever since, under the Lusocanal licence. When Covões and Luís Montez divided their stations in 2017, Marginal went to Montez and Radar stayed with Covões, who also runs the promoter Everything is New.
Some thirty programmes carry the week, each with its presenters named. Observatório Radar keeps one album in earshot all week and closes by awarding it stars, Discopátria does the same for a Portuguese release, Atacama Blues follows the blues and its tributaries, and Maus Exemplos gives an hour to the people who were told to get a proper job and never did.
For people who read liner notes.
