Funk, soul and jazz dug well past the names you know.
Radio NULA comes out of Ljubljana and runs on listener donations, which keep it free of ads. In the mid-2010s its evenings belonged to DJs who sent their shows in from all over, a different one at eight each night. Drum and bass came from Novi Sad and Sarajevo, rare grooves and disco from Podgorica, and other shows from Lyon, Sydney and Switzerland. Drumology, the Friday show from Novi Sad, started in 2014 and ran well past two hundred editions, and by 2019 there were Radio NULA parties as far away as Sofia.
The Classic channel is the main one and plays soul, funk, disco, hip hop and jazz from a library that keeps growing, deep enough that well over a thousand different artists turn up in a single week. Well-known soul and funk records sit beside acid jazz, Afrobeat and funk from Yugoslavia and Turkey. Two sister channels run beside it, Organic for the more acoustic end and Beatz for slow, dusty instrumentals.
Ljubljana, funkier than you'd guess.
