Afrobeat to bossa nova, with the Sahara in between.
FIP autour du monde was one of the six webradios FIP opened on 5 January 2016 for its 45th birthday, and its brief was the most open of the lot, a trip around the world in a few hours, from Morocco to Lapland by way of Colombia and Cuba. Music from everywhere had long been part of the main station's mix, alongside its jazz and chanson, so the channel gave that habit a stream of its own. Now called FIP Monde, it is still chosen and sequenced by hand by FIP's programmers, with no presenters and no advertising.
Brazil and the Latin Caribbean take a big share, from bossa nova and tropicália to salsa and Colombian cumbia, and West Africa another, afrobeat and Malian guitar next to the Tuareg desert-blues bands. Cape Verde, Turkey and the Balkans each get their turn around them, and raï or a long qawwali turns up now and then to pull the whole thing somewhere else again.
Homesick for places you never saw.
