Espeeera...
Quitando el polvo a la aguja…
Jazz, soul and broken beat from every time zone.
Gilles Peterson founded Worldwide FM in London in 2016 to carry underground music, and the stories attached to it, out of wherever it is actually being made. What it built instead of a correspondent network is a roster of people already living there: programmes arrive from Manila, Warsaw, Kathmandu and Beirut, presented by whoever's scene it is. It calls itself an independent community rather than a broadcaster, and it runs on listener memberships at six pounds a month rather than on advertising.
Luke Una files his hours under spiritual jazz, soul, disco and house, DJ Sotofett runs a dub programme, Kampung Jazz works South East Asia and Parijita's Nepalaya sits in traditional and folk. Peterson still takes a weekly slot of his own. For Refugee Week the station cleared space for music made inside immigration detention and songs recorded in Beirut during the war.
A passport, not a playlist.
