Specialist nights, from experimental to boogie.
fbi stands for Free Broadcast Incorporated, set up in 1995, and it spent the next eight years proving it deserved a frequency: month-long test broadcasts, over and over, while it campaigned for a permanent licence. The Australian Broadcasting Authority finally granted one, and the station went full time on 94.5FM on 29 August 2003. It is still not-for-profit, still made by hundreds of volunteers, and still broadcasting from unceded Gadigal land, out across Sydney from Katoomba to Wollongong.
It plays across a range it has bothered to catalogue: more than a hundred and seventy named genres, from Anatolian psychedelia and gqom to gamelan and yacht rock. Breakfast is Up For It, always live and always weird; specialist hours run from Deep Web to Sleepless in Sydney and Mithril; and each week the station picks an independent artist and an album to champion.
