Jazz as a living language, in a great many accents.
Chris Philips and Jez Nelson helped start the jazz station K-Jazz back in 1985, and One Jazz is the two of them doing it again on their own terms. It went on air on 25 May 2024 as a not-for-profit run by volunteers, with a launch night two days later at Jazz in the Round, the session Nelson co-founded at the Cockpit theatre in London. The idea was a single home for the music wherever it is being made, and its contributors, more than fifty of them, send in shows from around the world.
New releases come first here, with a daily hour of pre-release records and an album of the week, and the tradition is kept in view around them. The shows run from straight-ahead and vocal jazz to fusion, Latin and the avant-garde. Jazz Thing comes from the German magazine, Co de Kloet covers the Dutch scene, Christine Kamau presents Jazz In Africa and vibraphonist Orphy Robinson gives an hour to his own instrument.
Proof the music never stood still.
