Neo soul, hip hop and R&B, weighted toward the women.
HYFIN went live at one in the afternoon on Juneteenth 2022, a new channel from Radio Milwaukee, the non-profit behind 88Nine. It was part of a small wave of public stations built around what the trade calls urban alternative, and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting got it started. Tarik Moody became its programme director, with Element Everest-Blanks and Anthony Foster as its first hosts. It goes out on an HD sub-channel of 88.9 FM and online, and on launch day it also ran the teen stage at the city's Juneteenth celebration.
The mix takes in R&B, hip hop and neo soul with jazz and funk never far off, and a good deal of it is new. The Morning Mix opens each weekday, Foster, Element and Moody host the shows that follow, and DJ Megan Mathews has the weekends. New Music Mondays rounds up the week's releases, Milwaukee artists get a strand of their own, and the station's interviews and podcasts sit alongside the music.
Milwaukee, in its own voice.
