Dub, Balkan brass and soul from Tübingen's free radio.
The Förderverein für ein Freies Radio Tübingen/Reutlingen got Wüste Welle on air on 16 July 1995 and has kept it on 96.6 MHz ever since, reaching Tübingen, Reutlingen and Rottenburg from the Sudhaus on Hechinger Straße. As a non-commercial licensee it draws a base subsidy from the state media authority out of a thin slice of the broadcasting fee; that never covers a station with a training arm attached, so dues and donations carry the rest — and are what keep the programme politically its own.
More than 120 unpaid programme-makers fill the week. Petardo mixes reggae into cumbia, dub into dembow and dancehall into drum and bass live once a month; MagicMar handles Balkan brass, JugoRock and klezmer on Dom Kulture; Soul Unlimited runs soulful freestyle from ancient to future. Aus dem Archiv replays the station's own early broadcasts off the original cassettes.
Has its own big band. Really.
