Edinburgh's volunteer grid, from gabber to Scottish trad.
Matt Belcher had spent the best part of a decade in Edinburgh's clubs telling anyone who would listen that the city needed a community radio station, and in 2018 he and Jamie Pettinger, Andrea Montalto and Kenza built one. The first broadcast went out from the Hidden Door festival, after which the station settled into a studio at Summerhall and stayed six years. It now runs from Ground Floor, a café EHFM opened on Great Junction Street in Leith, whose profits go straight back into the schedule.
Two hundred shows have moved through the grid, and the only qualification is turning up with an hour worth hearing. Wub Club runs on wobbling 140 basslines, liming platforms soca and dancehall, Galway to Goa picks a new country every month, and SALiVATION ARMY is built around queer alternative sound. Mornings goes out live from the café counter, every day of the week.
No gatekeepers, just neighbours.
