Seventies and eighties soul, disco and 12-inch imports.
The Soulshow began on 22 October 1973 on the offshore station Radio Noordzee, when Ferry Maat filled a gap in the Sunday schedule with the soul records he heard in discotheques but never on the radio. After the pirates were outlawed he took it to the public broadcaster TROS, where on Thursday nights it drew more than 700,000 listeners and ran for fourteen years. It moved between stations for decades after that. Since 13 May 2015 it has been a station of its own, on air around the clock, and Maat is still the name above the door.
Soul, funk and disco from the seventies and eighties are the core, including the import records the programme was known for. Every evening at eight the station replays an original broadcast from the 1980s, chart rundown and all, taken from cassette recordings of the time. An early-evening block keeps up with new records in the same spirit, late nights turn to soul ballads, and daytime is given to the classics.
Thursday night, 1983, forever.
