Hip hop, R&B and neo soul with a Twin Cities accent.
Carbon Sound went live at noon on 16 June 2022, started by The Current at Minnesota Public Radio as a stream, a site and an app given over to Black musical expression. It was built in partnership with KMOJ, the Twin Cities community station, with money from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Minnesota's arts and cultural heritage fund, and it also goes out on 89.3 HD2. Julian Green assembled the music library and wrote its mission in the first three years. Sanni Brown has been its host and voice from the start.
Hip hop and R&B carry most of the day, with neo soul, funk and the stranger edges of both close behind, and a lot of it is new. Minnesota artists get real room here. Brown sits down with a local musician or organiser most weeks, Twin Cities DJs hand in mixes that run from house to Somali and global sounds, and anyone can send in their own music. The station says it wants to give more than it takes.
