Radio 1 Dance started on 9 October 2020 as an online-only stream on BBC Sounds, opened by Annie Mac, Danny Howard and Pete Tong with a four-hour marathon also heard on Radio 1. For its first years it ran almost entirely on repeats of Radio 1's dance shows, and commercial radio went to the High Court over the regulator's light-touch approval, losing in 2023. Its own daytime shows began in July 2024, and on 9 September 2025 it reached DAB+, among the first new BBC music networks since 2002.
Daytime runs on Charlie Tee's mix of new and classic dance, with Charlie Hedges playing old anthems in the late afternoon. Evenings bring Radio 1's own dance shows, from Danny Howard's Friday party and Pete Tong to the Essential Mix, plus a classic Essential Mix from the archive most weeknights. Around ten on weeknights a label or promoter such as Defected takes over for two hours.
Every night is Saturday night.
