Rock'n'roll, garage and rocksteady, chosen by hand.
Radio Cowabunga is the broadcast end of Promociones Cowabunga, a Spanish operation that produces, records, manages and airs, all of it run out of Seville by Tomás, who signs his work as Doctor Cowabunga. The label side, Grabaciones Cowabunga, puts out records by the same garage and punk bands the management side books, so the station spends a good part of its day playing its own people, a roster of Spanish garage, punk and rhythm-and-soul bands that also fill the label's catalogue.
Its own description claims rock'n'roll, soul, latin, rocksteady, garage and punk, and the through line is less the era than the refusal to let a recommendation engine pick: rockabilly and surf sit next to power pop and Jamaican rhythm with nobody smoothing the joins. Las Recetas del Doctor Cowabunga is the programme the rest of it hangs off, and its episodes stay up afterwards.
