Fresh cuts from Nantes: groove one hour, techno the next.
Prun' is an acronym — Premiere radio universitaire nantaise — and it began as a student exercise. In 1998 undergraduates on the information and communication course at the University of Nantes put a radio on air for a single week, broadcasting from a bus lent by the city transport company over AlterNantes FM's frequency. They liked it enough to keep going: the association was founded in January 1999, transmissions began that May, and a permanent Nantes frequency followed in 2007.
It carries dozens of shows a season, made by a couple of hundred volunteers, with no advertising anywhere on the frequency. The programming team digs for emerging artists across what it calls groove — hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul, afrobeats — and electronic music, techno through house and breakbeat, mostly from independent releases. Le jazz des femmes and Au pays des raves are two.
Nobody here is over it yet.
