Chicago house, dark techno and Sunday gospel, student-run.
WIIT started out in the 1960s as Radio 64, an AM signal for the Illinois Institute of Technology, and had a stereo FM transmitter on 88.9 by early 1972. That same year it had to give up its call letters for being too close to another Chicago station's, and spent nearly three decades as WOUI before taking WIIT back in 2001. It has stayed volunteer-run and noncommercial the whole way, with the studio and DJ lounge now in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center on Illinois Tech's main campus.
The schedule belongs to whoever signs up for a slot, mostly students with a few community regulars, so an evening can swing from techno and EBM to boleros and corridos in two hours. Da' Booth carries Chicago house through Sunday afternoons, The Breeze gives Saturdays to jazz old and new, Liminal Radio and Project Unknown take the darker electronic end, and talk about theatre, toys and student life fills the gaps.
Every slot answers to its host.
