Helsinki freeform, from vinyl house to bedtime stories.
Established in April 2026 by people who wanted somewhere for emerging and independent music to be heard, and already carrying a schedule most stations take years to assemble. It is not-for-profit, volunteer-run and paid for by listener donations, with the door open to anyone who turns up with an idea for a show. The odd part is the geography: the station is registered in Finland, but read the host biographies and much of the roster is Canadian — Halifax, the Maritimes, British Columbia.
Kohina — Finnish for noise — is John McDonald working through Loscil, Eno and Stars of the Lid under the subtitle Soundscapes and Interference. Waveform Architecture is DJ NEXUS6IX, on the decks since the Halifax rave scene of 1992. Elsewhere on the grid: opera, Euro-classical, underground tape rarities and b-sides, audiobooks in the small hours, and old sports commentary.
Small station, very long tail.
