Reggae, jazz, classical and show tunes, all week.
WTUL has been on in New Orleans since 1959, the oldest non-commercial station in the city, run by Tulane students and by anyone from the neighbourhood who turns up and puts in the hours. A future talk-show host and some of the city's own rhythm-and-blues royalty had early shows on it. Katrina flooded the building in 2005: the station went dark on 28 August and was back on 15 December from a mezzanine above the Rue de la Course coffeehouse, with Stanford University donating the bandwidth that kept the online stream alive.
Reggae Roots and Branches has run longer than any other reggae show in America. The rest of the week is progressive and electronica, straight-ahead jazz, classical, folk, blues, Latin and show tunes, with a children's hour in there too. In September 2026 the station ruled out AI outright: it will not knowingly play music made with it, and DJs may not use it for anything at all.
Older than the format wars.
