Winnipeg's volunteer dial: honky tonk to noise rock.
CKUW began in 1963 as CJUC, built by student David Shilliday and physics professor Ron Riddell, and took its present call letters in 1968 when the University of Winnipeg was founded. For three decades it was closed-circuit radio piped into Lockhart Hall lounges and the campus Buffeteria, punching well above that reach in the local music scene. Ten years of licence work followed; the CRTC approved the application in October 1998, and at midnight on 30 April 1999 the station signed on over Winnipeg with The Jam's “That's Entertainment”.
Four hundred and fifty watts from a rooftop in Osborne Village now carry a schedule built entirely by volunteers, who are required to keep 30 percent of what they play new. A weekday runs from honky tonk on Boots and Saddle to boom bap on Break North Radio, prairie choral singing on Active Voice, and outsider novelty records on Amateur Hour. The station publishes its own charts every week.
