Whoever turns up gets the studio and the transmitter.
SALTO is Amsterdam's open-access broadcaster, which in practice means the city makes the programmes and SALTO supplies the studio, the training and the signal at a price people can afford. Every show comes from outside the building, most of them from volunteers working out of activism, idealism or plain hobbyism, and nothing is edited or curated on the way through. Its own statement of principle is that ratings and advertisers' interests decide nothing here.
Of the nearly ninety programmes on the radio grid, roughly a quarter are music: Jazz in Mokum and Right On Jazz, Fingerpoppin' Soul, Blues Radio, Disco Zonder Drempels, The Garden of Liquid Sound, Riddim Shower, Pure Trance Sessions. The rest is the city talking — the public library, the student magazine Folia, a Reading in Black book club, neighbourhood podcasts.
You will not predict the next hour.
