Linz's free radio: sound art, KAPU punk, 17 languages.
Freier Rundfunk Oberösterreich has broadcast from Kirchengasse in Urfahr since October 1998, and had been making radio with Ars Electronica for years before it held a frequency of its own. The arrangement since has been simple: anyone who wants a slot can apply for one, the station trains them to use it, and the only content ruled out is racist, sexist or fascist. Everything else gets to make its case, and what results looks nothing like a grid a programme director would have built.
FROzine carries daily current affairs and there is a standing culture and education strand, but the rest is whatever turned up: Soulkantine, DJ Marcelle's Another Nice Mess, Stahlstadt-Rhythmen digging through bass and electronics, fem.pop, UNIsounds out of the university, and the Stadtwerkstatt's STWST48 marathons. More than a dozen languages pass through in a week.
Pöstlingberg's loudest neighbor.
