Hobart's youth station, 99. 3 and wide open to all.
Edge Radio started in 2003 and marked twenty years on air in November 2023, a not-for-profit running from nipaluna on muwinina country. It is Hobart's only youth station, which in practice means a core audience of fifteen to thirty and a reach that long ago outgrew it — the station's own line is that it now serves youth of all ages. Sixty percent of what it plays is original Australian music, and it claims nobody anywhere plays more Tasmanian. It gives out its own award, named for Hugh Burridge.
Some forty-five shows fill the week, each with a name on it and almost no format discipline between them: Strangeways on Tasmanian goth, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton digging afro, funk and library beats on wax, Prognosis on prog, In The Moment on sound art and improvisation, Late Night All Aussie. Books, media and sport take hours of their own, and The Wire and FBi arrive by syndication.
Tasmanian music gets first call.
