Soulful house and jazz-funk from a Shibuya bar.
Midori Aoyama had been running his EUREKA! party around Tokyo's clubs for about ten years, and had launched his own house label in 2016, when he started Tsubaki FM in February 2018. The plan was a weekly live broadcast from Tokyo, hosted by Aoyama in Japanese and English, with local and visiting DJs sitting in, and a stated aim of putting some life back into Japan's underground. By late 2019 he was running it with Masaki Tamura and Souta Raw, and ele-king was calling it one of the internet stations worth watching.
House, soul and jazz run through most of the shows, with disco, funk and fusion never far behind. Monday Tsubaki, Aoyama's own weekly, goes out live from Oiran and anchors the week. Around it sit residents like The Library and Soul Matters, Touchdown Africa for afro house, and Tsubaki FM editions recorded in Kyoto, Nagoya, Hiroshima and Okinawa with DJs from each city.
