Desert blues to flamenco, and a thousand stops between.
Pinguin Radio started in 2011 as an indie station built by people from the old Kink FM, and World is the stream where its taste wanders furthest from guitar bands. Like each of the foundation's genre channels it has its own specialist choosing the records, and that person casts an unusually wide net, so in a week more than a thousand different artists come through and hardly anyone gets more than a play a day. There are no presenters and no ad breaks, and the whole family runs on donations and sponsorship.
West Africa and the Sahara are the strongest threads, desert blues and Malian song next to afrobeat, with Cuban son and Afro-Cuban jazz, Spanish flamenco and Turkish psych all turning up regularly across the week. The rest is a long tail from nearly everywhere else, Korean, Sámi, Romanian and Brazilian records among it, each getting its moment before the map moves on.
Curiosity, no itinerary.
