Amsterdam boom bap, and the jazz underneath it.
Hou Het Zout has been on Salto in Amsterdam for years — a true school boombap show built on independent artists and underground releases, with enough of a cult following that an episode every three weeks stopped being enough for the people listening to it. So at the start of 2024 the people making it built a station around the show: the same music around the clock, independent, with nobody selling airtime between the records. The show still anchors the schedule, new every three weeks, with repeats filling the weeks in between.
Roots of the Dam goes out on Wednesday evenings and works backwards from the beats — jazz, soul, funk, reggae and further afield — on the principle that you cannot really hear boom bap without hearing what it was cut from. The rest is a rotation of classics, independent releases and underground records, alongside an archive of breakdance, graffiti and DJ footage.
Four elements, still counted.
