Leicester's Black music station, pirate roots and all.
When Leicester's pirate stations faded out in the 1990s they took the city's Black music radio with them, and the man behind 2Funky Records — the shop that had specialised in it until it closed in 2012 — started an internet station that same year to fill the hole. Radio2Funky ran online for six years before Ofcom granted it one of only two community FM licences in its round, and on 17 July 2020 it went out on 95.0 FM as Leicester's first station given over entirely to Black music and the arts around it.
The remit it signed up to is a daily slate of original, locally produced output: soul and old skool, reggae and bashment, R&B, hip-hop, drum and bass and UK garage, presented by local DJs across a seven-day grid — Lady Shortee on soca, Wayne C McDonald on new R&B, Fresh Juice into the evening. Its arts arm trains the next lot in presenting and production.
