De naald wordt afgestoft…
Musique actuelle, noise and every margin in between.
CKUT has been on FM since November 1987, though the thread runs back to a McGill radio club founded in 1921, and it still broadcasts from a ground-floor studio on University Street. It is member-owned, funded by a student levy and by donations, and run by hundreds of volunteers under a non-hierarchical collective that puts them in the decision-making rather than only behind the microphones. Nobody further up decides what a show is supposed to sound like, and Montreal keeps voting it the best station in town.
Seventy-three music shows share the week with a spoken-word half, and no two hours agree. Latin Music Mondays runs into World Skip The Beat, Drastic Plastic and Noise Not Borders take their own evenings, and Basabasa Soukousoukou Sounds, Radyo Kapwa and VOKO each broadcast in their own language. Prison Radio, Queercorps and La Voix des Immigrants hold the other half.
A mic for the mic-less.
