Student-run 89. 1: new imports, twee pop, Balearic.
WNYU is run end to end by NYU students — a board of student directors, from music and programming down to engineering and archives — out of its studios on University Place in lower Manhattan. The 89.1 signal itself comes from somewhere else entirely: the main transmitter stands at University Heights in the Bronx, on the campus NYU left decades ago, with a repeater covering the one it moved to. FM carries the weekday afternoons and late evenings; the stream runs around the clock.
The spine is The New Afternoon Show, three hours a day of new independent and imported records with in-studio sessions and, in its own words, no chatter or filler. Around it each host takes an hour of their own: Allison Engel on twee pop, K I O K A on Balearic house, Lilly Matthias on sixties funk and soul, Laura Kim on turn-of-the-century Korean pop.
