Spolveriamo la puntina…
Where UK dance music goes before it has a name.
Geeneus and Slimzee were teenagers, pushed off Pressure FM over politics and their age, when they put a jungle pirate on air over Notting Hill Carnival weekend in 1994, broadcasting from the kitchen of a council flat in Ingram House, Bow. The studio lived in Slimzee's house for its first three years. Seventeen years of illegal transmission followed, through UK garage and then the grime and dubstep it broke first, before Ofcom granted a community licence and Rinse moved to 106.8 FM and DAB in 2011.
Dizzee Rascal and Wiley had their first airtime here, Skream, Kode9 and Oneman made it the dubstep address, and the current grid keeps doing that job: jungle, jump-up, grime, garage, dub techno, soul and rap laid out across dayparts. A record label, an events arm and sister channels in Paris, Bristol and Hackney now hang off what started in that kitchen.
Thirty years, zero drift.
