Aspeeetta...
Spolveriamo la puntina…
Opera on Saturdays, jazz after dark, Latvian first.
It went on air on 6 January 1996 with four hours of programming a day, which was all Latvijas Radio could spare for a classical channel at the time, and it has since taken over the whole clock, news bulletins and all. It broadcasts from the radio house on Doma laukums in Riga's old town, and its motto has not moved either: Mode mainās, klasika paliek — fashions change, the classics stay. Three decades on, it has been the only station anywhere in the country to carry either classical music or jazz.
Latvian composers and performers get first call. Autogrāfs pēc ieskaņojuma puts new pieces on air straight from the studio, Latviešu mūzikas zelta fonds digs through the archive, and the Song Festival goes out live. Saturday evenings belong to the opera, and jazz keeps its own corner in Džeza impresijas, Brooklyn Jazz and the EBU's Euroradio Jazz Hour.
Riga's quiet concert hall.
