Paramaribo and the islands, heard from Amsterdam.
CaribbeanFM is one of the four radio channels the public-access broadcaster SALTO runs in Amsterdam, and the Surinamese and Caribbean communities make all of it. The programmes arrive from foundations rather than staff — Stichting Damsko, Stichting Multiculturele Communicatie, Stichting Between The Lines, the neighbourhood workers at Combiwel — with SALTO supplying the studio, the training and the signal. Radio Frimangron takes its name from a Paramaribo neighbourhood.
Eighteen programmes fill the week and most of them talk: Radio Mart bills itself as informative and outspoken, Radio D'Leon runs interviews, Bondru FM is an entrepreneurs' network, Radio Op'AI carries a message drawn from scripture, and Radio Petra does a children's story and then sport and music. Laidback Saturdays is the one built on records.
The diaspora runs the desk.
