Punk, free jazz, and noise since the 1968 barricades.
The Ljubljana student movement wanted a transmitter of its own, and on 9 May 1969 it got three hours a day on medium wave, broadcast from the basement of Dom VIII in the Rožna dolina student village and audible in a handful of streets and nowhere else. Legal recognition took until 1974. By the end of that decade the music desk was giving the first Slovenian punk bands the airtime no state station would, which is how a marginal irritant elsewhere in Yugoslavia became a mass youth movement here.
Four music desks split the week between them — a guitar line, a bass line, a general line, and Onstran linije for everything that falls outside all three. Rhyme Kickers, Skabinet and the long-running Riddim Operator, hundreds of episodes deep, share the grid with free improvisation and field recording. The ZARŠ label and the Klubski maraton tour put the bands in the studio.
Ljubljana's loudest dissertation.
