Volunteer radio from Portland: reggae to gospel to goth.
A group of Portlanders annoyed at having no classical station organised themselves as Portland Listener Supported Radio in 1964 and asked Lorenzo Milam, who had built KRAB in Seattle, for help. Milam sent down David Calhoun — an ex-monk and third-year medical student — with a transmitter in his VW. A donated basement room at Third and Salmon fit two tape recorders, one turntable and Calhoun, and in June 1968 thirty-odd volunteers put KBOO on the air for under four thousand dollars at ten watts.
It reaches Portland on 90.7, plus Corvallis and Hood River, volunteer-run and paid for by its members with help from local underwriters. Higher Reasoning Reggae Time runs into The Gospel and More Program, and Armando Puentes keeps La Voz Del Sabor going. Elsewhere: Africa-O-Ye!, Folk Espresso, Channel of Ghouls, and Slavic, Jewish and Persian hours.
Every diaspora gets an hour.
