Folk, roots and blues for Ottawa's long winter nights.
CKCU first went to air from Carleton University just after midnight on 15 November 1975, on 93.1 FM, as the first campus-based community station in Canada. Radio Carleton, a registered charity, has run it ever since with a small staff and more than 200 volunteers, from studios in the Nideyinàn building on campus. It marked fifty years with an anniversary weekend in November 2025, a commemorative book and a gold LP called Still The Mighty, after its long-standing nickname, The Mighty 93.1.
More than 125 shows a week make the schedule a patchwork, but folk and roots carry real weight, from Canadian Spaces, whose co-host Chris White was named for Folk Canada's lifetime achievement award in 2026, to Refolkus, alongside blues, swing and jazz, local indie bands and programmes in many languages. Its year-end chart puts Canadian singer-songwriters at the top.
