Rhein-Neckar's free radio: bass sessions, punk, and jazz.
Three years of groundwork went in before bermuda.funk got on air in autumn 2000 across the Heidelberg and Mannheim region, and it has broadcast from the Alte Feuerwache on Brückenstraße ever since. It is a members' radio in the literal sense — you join to get a slot, and the board waives the fee for anyone who cannot pay — and it takes no advertising, which it says is what keeps ratings and mass taste out of the scheduling. It offers no easy listening either: rough edges, no pretence at perfection.
Akwaaba FM goes out in English and Akan for the African diaspora; Alpha Centauri covers young Greek culture in German; Beat On The Brat plays punkrock old or new against soul, garage, new wave and the odd Schlager. The Bassnachtmixsession runs monthly through the night on drum and bass, dubstep, breakbeats and house, with guest DJs nobody has heard of yet.
Two cities, one unruly signal.
