Glasgow's student airwaves, ungoverned since 1995.
Subcity began in 1993 as Sweet FM, a restricted-licence station broadcasting out of an empty flat on Murano Street, and took its present name in October 1995. It moved into the University of Glasgow's McIntyre building in 2000, won a five-year AM licence in 2002 and lost it almost at once when the university complained the signal was interfering with its phone lines. Online since 2003, it counts Stuart Murdoch, Paul Thomson, JD Twitch of Optimo and a teenaged Hudson Mohawke among those who have held a slot.
Freeform is the founding principle: no prescribed playlist, no concept off-limits, and about a hundred contributors filling the week. Ambient and experimental run hardest, with techno, house and jungle close behind. Ceòl Dannsa works the branches of Scottish traditional music, Dè Ghabhas Tu? was the first Gaelic show the station carried, and techture reads architecture through field recordings.
The manager is the only boss.
