Electronic and hip-hop out of a Nijmegen backyard.
Open Source Radio has broadcast from De Achtertuin in Nijmegen since September 2020, filling long weekend afternoons into the evening. It is volunteer-run to an unusual degree, with a studio-manager rota and a buddy system that pairs every coordinator with somebody learning the job, and it pays its way on donations and arts funding rather than airtime. The venue Doornroosje, Cultuur Oost and Fonds Podiumkunsten are among the names behind it, and talent development is written into the brief.
Each hour goes to a resident or a visitor and follows them wherever they go — acid house and hard techno, amapiano, gqom and batida, then dabke, salsa, rocksteady and Anatolian rock. Turntable Tales, Fundamentals and Dirty Brunch come round regularly, and talks, interviews and storytelling each get slots of their own between the music.
Every slot, a different rulebook.
