Post-bop, porch folk, shoegaze and tape-loop noise.
Three companies own most of the FM dial in a metro area of two million people, which is the gap Freeform Portland was built to fill. Volunteers put KFFP-LP 90.3 on air in 2016 and later added a second low-power signal, KFFD-LP 98.3, for the central city, whose transmitter was moved recently to clean up the coverage there. The station is a 501(c)(3) with no commercial airtime to sell, and the format is the one in its name: the DJ decides what plays, and genre never enters into it.
More than 125 volunteers hold the schedule together, and an evening will run Eye On The Pyramid into What's This Called, then Disco's Revenge and Lazerbacon's Snaq Attaq before The Rotation takes midnight. Every set is logged track by track on Spinitron, the DJs keep a Discord open while they play, and first-timers are trained rather than auditioned.
Two signals, no playlist.
