Memphis soul, gospel, and punk from a glass box.
The frequency spent four decades as a jazz station: WUMR, the University of Memphis outlet that billed itself as the Jazz Lover, had held 91.7 since 1979. In March 2020 the university handed the licence over to Crosstown Radio Partnership, a three-way arrangement with Crosstown Concourse and the Daily Memphian newsroom, and on 5 October that year WYXR signed on from a glass-walled air room in the Concourse atrium, where anyone walking past can stop and watch the show being made.
More than ninety volunteer DJs fill the week and nothing binds them to a house style. The schedule's own tags run soul and rock first, then hip-hop, funk, rhythm and blues and house. Pastor Juan Shipp brings the D-Vine Spirituals catalogue he built in the 1970s, and the Daily Memphian files the news between records, with talk and interview hours folded into the week.
Nothing here matches anything.
