Freeform Brooklyn: every show live, nothing formatted.
Mark Brinda, Tariq Abdus-Sabur and Colin Ilgen put Newtown on the air from a former Bushwick brewery in 2009, and it became the place the neighborhood's guitar bands and its techno producers both turned up: a 2011 Northside showcase drew a good New York Times review, and in 2015 the station co-curated four concerts in MoMA's Sculpture Garden. Since moving to the ground floor of Danbro Studios on Meserole Street in 2018 it has doubled as a project space, with gallery openings on the first Friday of every month.
Shows run weekly or biweekly, two hours, and go out from the room itself: Acid Hour, 120 Riot Wrrrld, The Black Pop Show, Let's Talk Hip Hop, Let's Go Swimming. Laurel Halo, Mac DeMarco, Chelsea Wolfe, Legowelt and Galcher Lustwerk have all passed through. When the studio is dark, a selector works the station's own library, stocked entirely by the artists who send their records in.
Brooklyn with the door propped open.
