Contemporary jazz, sultry vocals and early-morning gospel.
WCLK first went on air in April 1974, put together by students and faculty at Clark College with a 54-watt signal that barely carried past the campus. Clark College became part of Clark Atlanta University in 1988, and over the years the station's power grew until it reached the whole metro area, broadcasting from studios in the lower level of the AUC Woodruff Library. It still trains CAU students in broadcasting, and its stated job has never changed much, keeping jazz in front of the city as an American art form.
Most of the week is hosted jazz, contemporary in the mornings with Morris Baxter and more mainstream through Rivablue's middays and Debb Moore's evenings, with plenty of standards and singers. Jamal Ahmad's SOUL of Jazz takes the afternoon drive, gospel opens weekdays on Joy in the Morning, and Sundays bring Pat Prescott's Favorite Things, made with WBGO, and Christian McBride on Jazz Night in America.
A jazz habit Atlanta never kicked.
