Cool jazz, bossa and Balearic chill from Tenerife.
Qfm started in 2005 in El Médano, a windsurfing town on Tenerife's south coast, with the idea of taking a local FM signal and pointing it at the rest of the world. It is run as a non-profit by a registered cultural association, the Asociación Cultural para la Difusión de las Artes y las Músicas de Canarias, and carries on DAB+ across Tenerife, La Gomera and Gran Canaria as well as online. One of its co-founders, María Fernández Couso, died in 2015, and a jazz duo recorded an album in her memory.
The format is jazz read widely: cool and Latin at one end, smooth, acid and nu-jazz through the middle, then bossa nova, jazz-funk, cool blues and Balearic chill. Shows run daily in Spanish, English, German and Italian, unsigned artists get played on merit rather than on label push, and once a year the station puts on Festival Jazz Roja in Los Cristianos, free and open air.
Spain's only full-time jazz dial.
