African hip-hop, from Accra drill to Jo'burg bars.
HipHop Africa works out of Accra as a platform rather than a single station: journalism, documentaries, an annual festival, live sessions, and the radio that carries all of it. The premise is that African hip-hop is one scene spread across fifty-four countries rather than a set of separate national ones, so both the newsfeed and the playlist move between Johannesburg, Lagos, Accra, Nairobi and Cairo without treating any of them as the centre. Seven years in, it counts five hundred artists featured.
The broadcaster list doubles as the schedule: Blay, Bxggles, Fahim and Zan on Bars on Bars, El Baby on This is HIPHOP, Satara Rosa curating Global Drums, Webbie on Fresh Music Friday and Trvp Time African. One Mic Session brings artists into the room to perform and talk — O'kenneth, Kayflip, Milona, Haeven — and the rotation leans hard on Ghanaian drill and trap.
Fifty-four countries, one dial.
