Pop hits, UK rap and festival indie for the under-thirties.
Radio 1 went on air at 7am on Saturday 30 September 1967, the BBC's answer to the offshore pirate stations that had built a young audience for pop, and its first voice was Tony Blackburn, hired from Radio Caroline and Radio London. Several of its first DJs came from the pirates too, and John Peel was on the opening rota. Annie Nightingale became Britain's first national female DJ there in 1969, round-the-clock broadcasting began on 1 May 1991, and in July 1994 it left medium wave for good.
Daytime is pop and the charts with plenty of chat, from Greg James at breakfast to the Official Chart on Friday afternoons. Jack Saunders brings the Hottest Record and other new music on weeknight evenings, and later the schedule splits by sound, with Pete Tong and the Essential Mix for dance, the Rock Show, the Indie Show, Kenny Allstar's Rap Show and BBC Introducing for unsigned acts.
Everyone's first radio station.
