Young South London on the mic, training as it goes.
Shane Carey was teaching in Peckham when knife crime spiked there in 2003, and his answer was a month-long restricted licence broadcast about it, made by the young people it was actually happening to. That month went well enough to justify applying properly: Ofcom granted a community licence in 2010, and 107.3 went live from the Brixton studios on 18 April 2011. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, engaged a few weeks earlier, turned up in January 2018, which says something about how far it had travelled.
Everything airs under one line — the sound of young London — and the playlist behind it is picked by the presenters and volunteers themselves, refreshed fortnightly. 1DJMK runs dancehall, Bisola and Bernz take UK rap and drill, Sinead Adams reggae and lovers rock, Daytimers the bass and garage end, and Toura brings in guest selectors for grime and techno.
The first slot on a long CV.
